After an hour of running around Sawyer did like he said he would do and dropped Trace off at his car. “It’s getting late. Do you want to stop off somewhere for a bite to eat?” Just then his phone pinged. “Hang on.” Sawyer swiped the front of his phone. “Yeah?” There was a moment of silence then Sawyer hung his head and sighed. “We’re on our way.” He swiped the phone off again and turned to Trace. “Trouble at the ranch. That damn south gate is down, this time for real, and the horses in the south field have gotten out. How fast can you drive?”

“Um… I can stay caught up.”

“Good. Go. Hurry up.”

Trace scrambled out of the truck at the same time fishing out his keys. He unlocked the door and fell into the driver’s seat jamming the key into the ignition in almost the same motion. Sawyer was waiting for him at the end of the aisle he had parked in but peeled out as soon as Trace put his car in drive. Trace did his best to catch him.

By time they arrived back to the ranch Mac and a few of the boys were leading a few horses back into a fenced area near barn number one. Sawyer was out of the truck before Trace could even put his vehicle in park. He jumped out too and went running over to where the rest were now standing.

“How many still out there?”

Trace just caught the tail end of the conversation.

Mac pointed toward the horses in the pen. “About fifteen more. Not sure where Alec and Rick are. I sent them further north thinking the mares would turn with the creek. Zach and Hosea are still south and I sent Jeff and Derick west. With the way the fence curves right there I figured there was no reason to send anyone to the east.”

“Good thinking. Where’s Roger and Jeff?”

“About forty miles out heading for Forth Worth. Gave them the weekend off. Didn’t have the heart to call them back. I got Marco and Levi with me. We’re headed back south since we spotted at least six or seven mares down that way. Could use you to head north and find Alec and Rick. They could have run into trouble.”

“What kind of trouble?”

“Just heard that the two had it out with each other. I would never have sent them off together if I had known that.”

“Shit! Couple of damn children.”

“Yep. That’s why I’m sending you. I’d kill ’em.”

Trace held up his hand as if he needed to do something to be noticed. “What about me? What can I do? And don’t tell me I can go make coffee for when everyone gets back. Give me a real job.”

Mac laughed. “Okay, little one. You head down to the south gate and close that damn thing once and for all.”

Trace looked to Sawyer who shrugged. “Sounds like a good plan to me.”

Trace was thrilled Sawyer was going to trust him to do something important.
